I read this book as soon as it came out in 2004. It opened my eyes. Not to the differences that exist between our lifestyles here in the States and those of privileged Afghan sect. It opened my eyes to the similarities.
Remember when you felt as if your brother or sister was more accepted or more loved by one parent or another? Or the feeling that comes from betraying your best friend for the first time? What about how it felt to move far away or have a friend leave and wonder what ever happened to them? Did you ever have a friend who wasn’t accepted by your other friends because of their family situation?
This story is about a boy named Amir, who is growing up in Afghanistan during the rise of the ill-fated republic of the 1980’s. It focuses on his relationship with his servant, a boy of similar age, whose name is Hassan. Despite their class differences, Amir and Hassan are essentially best friends. Things are complicated when Amir’s father, Baba, seems to take a preference to Hassan who is athletic, smart and well-mannered. At the same time Baba finds it difficult to connect with Amir, who is more artistic, fragile and dreams of writing.
The story takes you all the way up to the Kite Tournaments, a town tradition in which the children try and fly their kite into the others in order to cut their strings. The last kite standing is the winner and a great deal of pride is earned by the boy who survives the day. Kite Runners are the boys who chase after the kites that have been cut. It is a special privilege to be the catcher of the very last kite.
Hassan is the best Kite Runner of the town and while chasing a kite into an abandoned street, is stopped and brutally violated by an older boy who does not respect his class of people. Amir witnesses the violation, but runs away instead of sticking up for his friend and assisting him.
Now the tides have turned and Amir cannot stand to be around Hassan because of it’s reminder of his cowardice. He pushes Hassan away by bullying him and using his upper class as a tool against their friendship. Eventually, Amir betrays Hassan again by claiming he stole from him and this forces the servants to move on from the house.
Eventually the war to win the Republic is among us and Amir is spirited away to theU.S.to live in California safe from the violence and changing climate of the Afghanistan he knew. He is now very far away from his Eastern home and Eastern culture and it becomes possible for him to forget his childhood friend.
But a call from an old friend back east brings Hassan and his family into the picture again. Now Amir must got back to the still war-torn country and risk his life to save the son of a servant who was more like a brother. Maybe saving Hassan’s son from the same fate that his father had endured years before will be a way for redemption?
This book is not for the faint of heart. It looks without bias at the religious differences that separate the sect of Hassan’s people from the sect of Amir’s. It really illustrates the prejudice that exists there. Not only that but Hassan’s attack is hard to bear and the fate of his son later in the book is heart-breaking.
The storyline is engrossing and I could hardly put the book down to even eat my meals or complete my work for the day. I would read into the night until my eyes were so tired I couldn’t read any more.
